Newport dessert shop, Sweet Charlie’s, has announced its closure just a week after launching a fund-raiser in a bid to raise £35,000.
The café in the High Street is run by husband-and-wife team, David and Charlie McLoughlin, who are well-known faces in the Island’s hospitality sector. As well as the gift bouquets, the cafe specialised in crepes, ice cream, waffles and coffee.
However, earlier in the week, just £1,556 had been donated and a Facebook statement on Tuesday (January 17) said: “We are trying to contact all bookings, so please contact us if we haven’t managed to get hold of you personally. It’s been a truly hard decision to make but it has to be done.”
“Thanks to everybody for your support and we hope we have brought lots of happiness and smiles to many of you over the time that we’ve been open.”
