A Freshwater Parish Councillor who has served the community for 20 years has resigned after a series of sustained attacks on his property.

George Cameron admitted he is at the end of his tether as a group of teenagers continue to wreak havoc in the area.
Following a community meeting on Monday, George said he was targeted again later in the week, which was the final straw for him.

George, who has been a parish councillor since 2003 and also represented both Totland and Freshwater on the IW Council, said: “I am normally a strong person but this has hit me hard. They have attacked our place so many times, night after night. It’s the same ones who are banned from the area and everyone knows who they are, including the police, but they still come into the village every night.

“I went away to the mainland with my partner, Sue, last Thursday, and because we weren’t there, they smashed in my back door and broke the double-glazing windows. My neighbour saw them and they started kicking her door scaring her. I phoned the police and they said they couldn’t come around but they would get the house boarded up.

“I just have no confidence in the police. The property has been attacked at least four times and they were at it again on Wednesday night. We have installed cameras outside but when we’re watching television, we constantly have one eye on the cameras and jump at every little sound.

“I know the police don’t have the resources, but I feel that they are not taking this seriously. I’ve heard the kids mention the parish council a couple of times, so I feel if I step back, they may stop targeting me.

“There have been lots of other incidents in the village which haven’t even been reported to the police because they don’t come out even if you call them.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this before; it’s really scary.”
