Several members of the Newport IW Shotokan Karate Club delivered strong performances in their first-ever competition, the Shotokan of England Karate Union Championships on November 1.
Several members of the club delivered outstanding performances in their first‑ever competition, achieving success across a range of categories.
In the 12–15 years kyu grade events, Chloe Maitland placed third in kata, while Kaden Fletcher secured second in kumite. In the 16 years and above kyu grade kata, both Matt Tricker and Stuart Van Cuylenburg achieved third place finishes.
Jess Osman, who had previously competed in junior competitions, stepped up to the black/brown belt categories. She impressed by winning first place in kumite and taking second in kata. Amanda Osman also stood out, progressing through a round‑robin format to claim first place in the ladies black/brown belt kata, with a strong performance of kata Jitte. She followed this with spirited fighting to win first place in the ladies kumite.
The club excelled in the men’s black/brown belt kumite and kata events, the largest contests of the day. Four members reached the kumite semi‑finals and two advanced in kata. In the first semi‑final, Connor Taylor‑Barnes edged past Sensei Andy Shorkey 2‑1, while Tom Porter defeated Sensei Simon Barnes 2‑0. Porter went on to win the final 2‑0.
In the mixed team kata semi‑finals, Newport A narrowly beat Lovedean A with kata Jiin, while Newport B secured third place.
The men’s team kumite provided the day’s highlight, with Newport A defeating Newport B 3‑0 in the final to lift the Shotokan of England Karate Union team kumite shield.
