A total of £400 and 13 boxes of dog food were donated to the Isle of Wight’s branch of the RSPCA after an appeal for help.
The appeal was made shortly after the news that 65 dogs were seized from a van and house on the Island.
Colleagues at the local Southern Co-op’s food stores immediately wanted to help.
With a number of them also volunteers at the centre, they knew that the shelter was really struggling to accommodate the large number of dogs.
Neil Riley, Manager of The Co-operative Food – Freshwater, said: “Our colleagues were really distressed when they heard the local RSCPA centre was in need of help so we set about seeing what we could do.
“The RSCPA said they needed money to help cover the cost of medical bills and also donations of particular food, collars, sheets and blankets.
“We had a great response from all of our local colleagues and managed to gather 13 boxes of dog food and £400 in cash.
“The ladies from the shelter were blown away. It’s so nice when good things spring from horrible situations. It was a day I felt extra proud to be part of Southern Co-op.”
Stores that donated were Carisbrooke’s High Street, Cowes’ Mill Hill, Freshwater’s Afton Road and Avenue Road, Shanklin’s Regent Street, Sandown’s Avenue Road petrol filling station and Rookley’s Main Road.
