Angela Turner, a devoted mother from Shanklin, has been recognised with a national accolade at the 2024 WellChild Awards, held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, in London.
Nominated by her sister, Lisa Whitaker, Angela received the Parent Carer Award, for her tireless efforts in campaigning and fund-raising to improve the care of children with complex medical needs, like her late daughter, Chelsea.
Angela’s dedication to improving the care provided for Chelsea and other sick children has left a lasting impact. She spearheaded the installation of hoisting and washing facilities in St Mary’s Hospital’s children’s ward, all the while caring for Chelsea, who tragically passed away last year at the age of 11, and her other children, Ollie, Riley and Lexie. Chelsea, who battled cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and chronic health issues, was her mother’s constant inspiration.
In memory of Chelsea, Angela, and Chelsea’s father, Matthew, donated funds originally raised for a home sensory room to purchase a portable sensory station for Barton Primary School, to benefit pupils with special educational needs.
Lisa, who nominated Angela, praised her sister’s resilience and positivity. “Angela is truly an inspiration, turning so many negatives into positives,” she said.
The WellChild Awards celebrate the resilience of children living with serious illnesses and honour the dedication of parents and carers, like Angela. Prince Harry, a patron of the awards, spent time with Angela and other winners as he attended his 13th WellChild Awards ceremony. He said: “This evening, we come together not only to celebrate remarkable resilience and spirit but also to recognise the unsung heroes — parents, carers, siblings, and professionals.”
The event was also attended by celebrities including Rod Stewart and Oti Mabuse, with performances from Beverley Knight and Pixie Lott.
