Sandown secure solid successes

Newchurch keeper blocks Niton attack

In the Cup, Sandown & Lake recorded wins both in Hampshire and on the Island, while East Cowes Sports claimed victory on penalties.

There were 20 goals across three Division One matches. Cowes secured a Wessex League win, Newport scored three goals to earn a point, and Shanklin Ladies scored four to win away at Mudeford.

Hants and Island Cups

Sandown & Lake, from IW Division Two, won 3-1 away to Hythe Aztecs in the Hants Vase. After a goal-less first half, Dylan Andrews scored for the Islanders on the hour, with Ethan Dicker adding a second and sub, Louis Day, ensuring Sandown reach the fifth round on February 7.

Division One Osborne Coburg overcame Division Two’s East Cowes Sports 5-4 on penalties, after the Memorial Cup second round match finished 3-3. William Johnson, Stephen McCarthy, and Jason Pengelly were on target for Coburg, and Shaun Gulliver, Blake Reeves, and Josh Richardson scored for ECS.

Sandown & Lake Res won 2-1 away at Oakfield Res, with both goals from Temitope Adafin to secure progress to the third round of the Junior A Cup.

Island Divisions One and Two

Division One’s Northwood drew 4-4 at home to Brading, with Connor England, Connor Mooney, and Aarun Ince (2) scoring for Northwood, with Roman scorers, Caleb Dyer, Dan Vale, and Aaron Bennett (2).

Ventnor, under caretaker manager, Mark Mulholland, won 2-0 at home to Oakfield. Liam Harper and Robert Gee were on target for fourth-placed Ventnor, who hope to resolve their internal issues ahead of this weekend’s away game at Northwood.

Leaders, West Wight, won 9-1, after leading 4-0 at half-time, at home to Cowes Res, with 2 goals each for Ash Brett, Josh Daley, and sub, Alfie Nye, and 1 apiece for Gareth Bricknell, Myles Taylor, and Chris Elliott, with Mark Goodwin scoring for Cowes.

In Division Two, coming back from 2-0 down, Binstead COB won 7-2 at home to a sporting Pan, with James Gallop, Adam McKenner, James Milligan, and player-of-the-match, Cam O’Rourke’s bicycle kick. Lee Eldridge and Tyler Thorne (2) were also on target for a resurgent Binstead, who are second to Sandown & Lake.

Niton won 1-0 at home to Newchurch in a closely contested clash, with Jack Barsdell scoring the winner with 30 minutes to go.

Combinations One and Two

Bembridge & Vectis won 1-0 at home to Osborne Coburg Res in Combination One.

West Wight Res won 3-1 away at Shanklin Res, with goals from Liam Blythe (2) and Taylor Simmonds, with the consolation strike from Seth Arnold in the first half.

In Combination Two, Chad Oatley inspired Binstead COB Res to win 2-1 away at Sandown & Lake A, with goals from a Dan Murphy header and ‘birthday boy’ Chad Oatley. Sandown’s Jarred Brodie got the consolation goal, and 16-year-old Ernie Oatley had an impressive debut for the Binmen.

Wessex

In the Premier Division, goals from Scott McFarlane and William Bridi helped Cowes win 2-1 away at Bournemouth.

East Cowes Vics lost 1-0 away at Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

Newport drew 3-3 at home to Kintbury in Division One, with 2 goals from Ji Nash and 1 from Joe Butcher.

Women

In Hants Division One, second-placed Shanklin won 4-3 away to Mudeford, with Kirren Shaw and Gemma Woodford scoring a goal each in both halves. There were outstanding performances from Freya Henry and Tilly Yardley.

Wight Eagles lost 2-1 away to Winchester, in Hants Division Two, in horrid conditions and on a boggy pitch; Eagles lost their influential midfielder and skipper Millie Tinsley to injury. With the Islanders reshuffling, and conceded an early goal, Eagles were awarded a penalty only for the ref to change the decision. After the break, subs, Emma Webb, and academy player, Magenta Coleman, were introduced, with Daisy Chapman and player-of-the-match, Tawnie Siddall, outstanding. Kira Smith scored from the spot after being fouled for 1-1, and disappointedly gave away a disputed penalty in the dying minutes to lose the match.

Midweek

Cowes midweek Wessex match at Millbrook, Vics trip to Petersfield and Newport’s visit to Ringwood were all postponed.
