Sandown man dies after being assaulted last month

A Sandown man who was punched out of a wheelchair and beaten during an assault in the town last month has died.

As previously reported, police last week issued an urgent appeal for witnesses following the assault on Leed Street, between 12.45pm and 12.50pm, on Thursday, February 19.

The victim, 55-year-old Graham Hyslop, suffered injuries to his head and arms. Police said he was knocked out of the wheelchair he was using at the time, then spat on and his bank card was stolen.

As part of the investigation, two boys aged 14 and 15, both from Sandown, were arrested on suspicion of robbery. A third boy, aged 14 and from Ryde, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.

A police spokesman said: “Officers were called at 12.49pm on Sunday, March 1, to concerns for the welfare of a man who had been found unresponsive at an address on Leed Street, Sandown. Officers attended and established that a 55-year-old man from Sandown had died.

“His death is being treated as unexplained, but is not currently thought to be suspicious, and remains under investigation. A file is being prepared for the Coroner.”

A fund-raiser has been organised to raise money to pay for his funeral. Hazel Hyslop said: “He didn’t deserve what he got; he was an amputee; he lost his leg in October 2024; he couldn’t fight back and the case is still ongoing.” The fund-raiser can be found at iw.observer/graham-hyslop.
