Red Squirrel Trust celebrates 20 years with woodland events

Red squirrels in Howes Wood

This October, the Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust celebrates its 20th anniversary with a week-long programme of events in its newly-acquired woodland, marking Red Squirrel Week which runs from October 5 to October 12. The site, purchased last year thanks to generous supporters and the fund-raising efforts of Atlantic rower, Simon Howes, will host guided tours and refreshments throughout the week.

Each day offers a unique opportunity to explore the private woodland, which is usually closed to the public. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy footwear, as there are no formal paths.

The celebrations begin on Tuesday, October 7 with a launch event attended by trustees, volunteers, and Simon Howes. Wednesday is Business Day, welcoming local companies who support the Trust or wish to get involved. The Trust encourages Islanders to look for its business supporter kitemark, when choosing where to shop.

Thursday (October 9) is Education Day, aimed at schools, colleges, and community groups interested in woodland ecology and red squirrel conservation. Friday is supporters’ day, when donors and adoptees are invited to enjoy the site and bring a guest in exchange for a donation.

Saturday focuses on volunteering, with opportunities to meet the team and sign up for roles ranging from practical help to specialist input.

The week concludes on Sunday, with monitoring day, where experts will document the woodland’s biodiversity.

The Trust is also appealing for donations of a recycled cabin and tools to help transform the site into a long-term education hub. To follow the restoration journey, visit iw.observer/rst-news.
