One of the biggest groups of the ‘Sixties, Herman’s Hermits, will be performing at the annual charity Towers Party in Yarmouth tomorrow (Saturday).
The party, now in its 61st year, is held at the home of John Caulcutt, in the High Street, and last year raised around £120,000, making it one of the biggest fund-raisers on the Island.
In 1966, Herman’s Hermits their record sales outsold even The Beatles in America and, on their US tour, they were supported by The Who.
Their many hits included ‘I’m into Something Good’, ‘My Sentimental Friend’, and ‘Mrs Brown, You’ve got a Lovely Daughter’, and their current line-up includes original member, Barry Whitwam.
Actor, Jim Murray, from ‘The Crown’, will be the night’s compère, and the rest of the musical line-up. It includes local singer, Jack Russell, actress, Juliet Howland, who sings folk and country, saxophonist, Sophie Sax, Island band Kaleidosonic, White Hot Pipes, John’s own band, Step on the Gas, and Afterlight.
John said: “We’ve got a great line-up again, and it will be a fabulous night. We also have fireworks shortly after 10pm and, this year, we are raising money for Cure Parkinson’s, Motor Neurone Disease Association, and local good causes.”
Doors open at 7.30pm and the party goes on until 1am. Tickets, £25 (£15 for 14 and under), from the Royal Solent Yacht Club and Harwood’s of Yarmouth. Food provided by Spice Central, Cowes; three bars on site. All welcome.
