A vet in Shanklin is to close, after its owner became tired of “constant criticism” from other vets.
Olivier Ghesquiere has decided to shut Ghesvet. In a social media post to his “Dear clients, dear friends,” he wrote “It is with deep sadness that I write here the news of my closing the practice.”
“My shoulders are letting me down, but I am mainly tired of the constant criticism from some other vets on the Island and farther, for years, for working below standards when I am only old-fashioned.
“All the veterinary centres on Wight have been made aware of my decision three weeks ago and offered the possibility of taking over the practice, but I received no reply. I am aware that it will be difficult for each of you to find another practice for your companions.
“I can only encourage you to start enquiring without waiting. I will miss you enormously.”
Many Islanders left supportive messages thanking him for his care of their pets over the years.
Mr Ghesquiere will stop treating small animals in September and end his horse work at the end of the breeding and scanning season.
Lacie Scott Jackson, office manager at Friends of the Animals (FotA) said: “This news is devastating. Olivier is such a kind and compassionate person and his priority is always to the animal and never the money. I’m worried to think how many animals will now go untreated.
“I will never forget when I phoned Olivier before 6am for my cavalier as she had a fish hook and bait caught in her tongue. He immediately opened up for me. He’s always worked well with the charity, giving us huge discounts and he’s helped us with many animals. We have nothing but admiration for him and will miss him dreadfully.
“It’s amazing to see all the love he’s received with his post and I wish him and his lovely wife nothing but happiness. I’d like to thank him on behalf of everyone at FotA for his commitment for all these years.”
