NHS absentees still causing problems for trust

Stress, depression and anxiety are still causing major staff absentees within the Isle of Wight NHS, despite efforts by the Trust to reduce the numbers.

It has been revealed that almost 30 per cent of all staff absentees throughout the month of January were due to the three conditions. Coughs, cold and flu were the second highest reasons for absenteeism, at 13.9 per cent.

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust says a manager toolkit called ‘how to support staff who are experiencing mental health problems’ has been circulated.

The Occupational Mental Health Practitioner appointed by the Trust to try to tackle the ongoing issue revealed it received 19 new referrals last December alone.
