With polling day fast approaching, many Islanders are still deciding who to support in next Thursday’s (May 7) local elections. To help voters make an informed choice, the IW Observer has created a dedicated election portal at iw.observer/elections2026, bringing together everything you need in one place.
The portal includes a full list of candidates standing in every ward, links to their websites or social media pages where available, and background information to help you understand who is hoping to represent you on the IW Council. Interviews with party representatives are also being uploaded, giving you the chance to hear directly from those putting themselves forward. More material will continue to be added in the run‑up to polling day.
If you are planning to vote in person, remember that you must take valid photo ID to the polling station. A passport, driving licence, or older persons’ bus pass are accepted, but you can find the full list of valid IDs at iw.observer/how-to-vote. Your polling card will tell you which polling station you must use, and you need to go to that specific location. If you’re unsure, check the card now so you’re not caught out on the day.
This election matters. The councillors you choose will be responsible for making decisions that affect our everyday lives – from roads and planning to local services and community investment. Whoever is elected, we need councillors who are willing to work together, listen to residents, and focus on getting things done. So before you cast your vote, take a moment to look again at the literature that has come through your door. Consider which candidates have spent their time offering positive reasons to support them, rather than attacking others. A constructive campaign is often a good sign of somebody who will be a constructive councillor.
Your vote is your voice. Please use it – and use it to support people who want to build something better for Islanders, not tear others down.
