New mural transforms Sandown underpass near railway station

A new community mural has been painted on the underpass between Sandown Railway Station and Perowne Way to brighten up the area.

The once dark and dull tunnel has been brought to life with the vibrant mural, created as part of a youth-led community project involving local artists.

Artists Hollie Jackson and Emma Goss designed the mural, after talking to the youngsters. Hollie said: “It’s one of a three-part project, which also includes a Jo Cori sculpture and a photographic and podcast project with Youth Bay, with a current exhibition at Quay Arts.

“We were asked to be part of the project and spoke to the local youths who told us what they wanted us to paint. They said the underpass was dingy and they felt anxious walking through it, so, with their help, we designed a mural to brighten up the underpass with a painting which included their ideas. It depicts the wildlife around the railway area and the sun rising.”
