Island Roads delay project Medina Way repairs moved

Medina Bridge

Essential maintenance work on the Medina Way dual carriageway has been postponed until September 2026, Island Roads has confirmed.

The six-month project, originally scheduled to begin this autumn, will see 16 bearings replaced on Medina Bridge, the Island’s longest and most heavily used structure. However, the delay has been agreed to allow engineers more time to resolve a number of complex technical challenges identified during the design phase.

Bearing replacement is a proactive measure designed to extend the lifespan of the structure and ensure its long-term safety. Island Roads said the bridge remains safe for use and the delay will not compromise its integrity.

Work cannot begin later this year because of the need to avoid disruption during the busy summer season, and major Island events such as the Isle of Wight Festival.

An Island Roads spokesman said: “We appreciate that this is an important project and we are committed to carrying out the work to the highest possible standard. The delay allows us to complete the design and planning stages thoroughly, ensuring the work is delivered efficiently when it does go ahead.”

Further updates will be provided as the revised programme is finalised.
