For many people, reaching their 70th birthday might prompt thoughts of a special meal, a favourite restaurant or, perhaps, a quiet celebration with family and friends. Not so for former Ryde Junior School sports teacher, Denise Shepherd, who decided there was only one way to mark the start of her 70th year – by taking to the skies!
Always one for a challenge, and keen to make her milestone birthday count, Denise bravely stepped out of her comfort zone and took part in an exhilarating wing walk, while at the same time raising valuable funds for Sporting Opportunities Isle of Wight.
Denise contacted Sporting Opportunities trustee and coach, Deborah Percy, to let her know about her daring plans and her wish to use the challenge to support the charity. Her adventure soon attracted plenty of interest, with members of the Island’s Caravanning Club, of which Denise and her husband are members, turning out to cheer her on.
With the team from Ethel Dares Wing Walking, Denise was in the expert hands of wing-walking specialist, Stephen, and pilot, Martyn. Safety and professionalism were clearly paramount as Denise prepared herself for the extraordinary experience of leaving the ground, and taking to the wing atop a classic 1940s bi-plane.
Excitement mounted as the aircraft took off. Then, as Denise returned safely to the ground, she was greeted by a tremendous cheer from her supporters – a fitting reception for a 70-year-old who had, quite literally, taken her birthday celebrations to new heights.
Having successfully completed her first wing walk, Denise is already planning a more advanced wing-walking experience, which promises to take her even higher and faster. The next challenge will introduce steeper turns, increased G-forces, and a series of more energetic and dynamic manoeuvres.
