Island Roads advise ‘Plan for disruption’

Improvement work to strengthen sections of Victoria Avenue, in Shanklin, will begin on Monday (July 14).

The scheme, which will involve deeper than usual excavations to address underlying carriageway issues, will be carried out over ten working days. To enable this, the road will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the works, although it may reopen at weekends if it is safe to do so.

The project will be completed in three phases to minimise disruption. These are: west of Florence Road to east of Furze Hill Road, west of Furze Hill Road to west of Westhill Road, and west of Westhill Road to east of Windsor Drive.

While an official diversion will be in place via Whiteley Bank, Island Roads say local access routes will remain open for as long as possible to ease congestion. Advance warning signs will be installed to help motorists plan ahead.

An Island Roads spokesman said: “It is unfortunately not possible to undertake work of this nature without causing some local inconvenience, but by announcing the work in advance, residents and businesses can at least plan for any disruption.”
