Island resident sails into the history books

Sir Ben Ainslie lifts the Louis Vuitton Cup with the Ineos team

Island resident, Sir Ben Ainslie, was co-helm of the Ineos Britannia crew that lifted the Louis Vuitton Cup, and secured a place in the America’s Cup for the first time since 1964.

They face defending champions, New Zealand, in the 37th running of the event, between October 12 and 17 in Barcelona. The Princess of Wales is among those who have sent their congratulations and good wishes to Sir Ben and the Ineos team. His family home, Woodlands Vale, near Seaview, a Grade II-listed building with 30 acres of land and views across the Solent, is currently for sale at £3 1/2 million, because his sailing commitments mean he does not spend enough time there.

The America’s Cup is the world’s oldest sporting competition. The trophy, fondly known as The Auld Mug, was first raced for in 1851 around the Isle of Wight. An interview with Sir Ben is featured in the growing up in the bay documentary, ‘An Island Olympic Journey’, which can be watched via iw.observer/an-olympic-journey.
