Island choirs return home after Carnegie Hall debut

Members of three Island choirs, who recently performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall, are set to reprise their concert closer to home, with two performances of Fauré’s Requiem, at Newport Minster, later this month.

Medina Community Choir, Gurnard Community Choir and the NHS Nightingales, all directed by Hannah Brear, joined a massed international choir at the prestigious venue in June. They were the only European group to be invited.

Island audiences can enjoy their full programme at Newport Minster, on Saturday, July 19 at 7pm, and Sunday, July 20 at 3pm. The concert will feature Fauré’s Requiem accompanied by a professional orchestra, alongside a selection of choral favourites, including Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, Mozart’s Ave Verum, and Puccini’s Nessun Dorma.

All pieces have been specially arranged and orchestrated by James Longford, for a bespoke ensemble featuring horns, strings, timpani, percussion and organ. Guest soprano, Thea Callaghan, will perform Pie Jesu as part of the Requiem, with other solo performances also planned.

Hannah said: “It was a huge honour to sing in such an awesome venue, and it will be extra special to perform these classics at home to Island audiences.”

Tickets are £10, or four for £36, via mcctickets.co.uk. A retiring collection will support the IW Wave Project, and there will be a raffle and refreshments in aid of Newport Minster and choir funds.
