The Island Roads Safety Group has recorded 61 incidents in its first three months, highlighting the growing problem of bad driving and abuse towards roadworkers. Formed after a rise in reports of motorists ignoring temporary closures and behaving aggressively, the group includes the IW Council, police, the Police and Crime Commissioner and Island Roads.
Since March, 14 cases have been reported to police, with action ranging from warning letters to prosecution. Most involve drivers breaching road closures, though one case concerned harassment of call‑centre staff and another a public figure encouraging people to “sneak around” barriers.
Even during Walk the Wight, staff witnessed motorists driving through “No Entry” signs and entering closed roads, putting walkers at risk. Officials say such behaviour is dangerous and illegal, and warn that driving through closures can invalidate insurance. The group continues to push for tougher enforcement and respect for roadworkers.
