Hurst voluntary redundancies

Ironmongers Hurst is to ask its staff to consider voluntary redundancies as it battles the economic difficulties and ongoing market challenges.

The company was founded in 1859, when Charles Wheeler opened a foundry at Pan before moving to Newport in 1886. It currently has six branches spread across the Island in Newport, Ryde, Cowes, Shanklin, Ventnor and Freshwater.

A company spokesman confirmed: “Like many independent UK retailers, we are navigating a dynamic and evolving market. Factors such as rising costs, increased competition, the growth of online shopping, and broader economic influences present ongoing challenges.

“Despite these challenges, we remain committed to providing our customers with an exceptional shopping experience. We are proud to offer one of the most extensive and diverse product ranges within our retail footprint.

“As a 166-year-old company, we uphold cherished traditional values, which require significant investment. To ensure the long-term sustainability of our business, we are exploring the possibility of voluntary redundancies.

“We have no current plans to close any of our branches and are proud to continue serving our local communities across the Island. We deeply value the loyalty of our customers and are immensely grateful for their continued support and encouragement.

“Supporting local high streets has never been more crucial. We encourage our community to continue to shop locally and experience service that only retail environments can offer.

“We would like to remind the local community that we deliver free of charge to any Island address for orders £20 and above.”

There is a free exhibition on Hurst’s history this month at the Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council premises in Newport High Street.
