Haylands Horticultural Society Show

By Press Release Sep 26, 2022

Following a two-year gap, the Haylands Horticultural Show once again took centre stage at Ryde United Reformed Church.

Although the country was in national mourning for HM Queen Elizabeth II, it was felt that as a keen gardener and patron of the Royal Horticultural Society, she would have approved of the event going ahead.

On the day 204 exhibits from 32 exhibitors in 85 classes were on display over six sections.

Show secretary Martin Stock said: “It was great to see so many regulars returning after the difficulty of the past two years.”

Whilst lack of rain over the summer meant low entries in a number of classes, the recent change in the weather improved the fortunes of a number of the avid growers who regularly enter.

When it came to the prizes, it was a tussle between show stalwarts, Andrew Nightingale and Ian Stock, with both winning trophies. Andrew took the top honour, taking the Best in Show trophy for his specimen dahlia. However, Ian came up trumps with his vegetables. His plate of tomatoes won the Best in that Section.

Though the fruit numbers were down on previous shows, another regular exhibitor, Tony Carlin, still managed to win both the trophies available.

As well as a large display of cakes and handicrafts, there was the unusual addition of a rather large Lego car ferry, complete with harbour.
