Big clean up at Colwell Bay

By Press Release Sep 27, 2022

A group of Yarmouth Sailing Club members and friends took part in a beach clean at Cowell Bay picking up 216lbs of rubbish.

Organiser, Laura Wason, said: “We spread out across the beach and sea walls in both directions, towards Totland as well as Fort Albert, and in addition also picked litter up from the car park and footpaths.

“We collected a grand total of 216lbs/76kgs and I am delighted. By coincidence, the Marine Conservation Society has chosen their annual beach clean dates to be from 16-25 Sept so that ties in neatly.

“Their website states: ‘Ocean pollution is one of the greatest threats to the marine environment, with around 40 per cent of the world’s marine mammals threatened with extinction due to pollution. Cleaning up our beaches is a practical way to stop litter entering the water, so this is a great opportunity to help make our beaches and oceans cleaner and safer for humans and wildlife alike’.

“A huge thank you to everyone who came along and did a sterling job, picking up rubbish and helping keep our beautiful coastline clean.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for our next YSC beach clean which is on Saturday, December 17, from 10am-noon, at Fort Victoria.”
