Free support sessions available for dancers

With Islanders following government guidance to stay at home, help the NHS and save lives the creative industries have been hit hard by the closure of theatres and other entertainment venues.

One former professional ballet dancer, who now runs a successful psychotherapy practice in Newport is stepping up to offer some help for dancers during this challenging time. Terry Hyde, who danced with the Royal Ballet and in West End musicals, is campaigning for honest, proactive discussion and understanding of mental health and wellbeing in the UK dance industry, is offering all dancers, who are not existing clients, two free video-link therapy sessions. He hopes that these sessions will help them to cope better over the coming weeks and months when there is likely to be very little, if any work.

Terry said: “As a retired ballet dancer I know from experience how mental health issues such as anxiety or depression can affect a dancer’s performance, so for a dancer to be out of work and facing an unstable future the effects can be devastating.

“I am offering these free video link or telephone counselling sessions at a very unprecedented time when dancers will need someone to talk their thoughts and feelings through when money is very tight.”
