Five rescued macaques to join Monkey Haven

Monkey Haven Primate Rescue has announced the upcoming arrival of five pig-tailed macaques, marking a major rescue milestone during Macaque Week.

The group comes from an unlicensed private zoo, which was shut down by authorities. After being rescued, the macaques were transferred to the AAP Rescue Centre, where they have received specialist care while remaining together as a social family group.

The troop includes an adult breeding pair, their two offspring, and an unrelated female who was previously confiscated during suspected illegal transport.

Monkey Haven said the rescue highlights the difficult circumstances many primates face, and the importance of rescue organisations working together across Europe.

The macaques are expected to arrive at the sanctuary towards the end of May, where they will be given a permanent home with an environment designed to meet their welfare needs.

Throughout Macaque Week, Monkey Haven will also be sharing the stories of each macaque to raise awareness of primate welfare, and the need for rescue and rehabilitation work.

A spokesman said: “We are incredibly excited to welcome these macaques to Monkey Haven.

“Their journey has not been straightforward, but we are committed to giving them the safe and secure future they deserve.”
