Daisy takes a few steps after being ‘deliberately’ hit by car

By Press Release Mar 7, 2024

A much-loved dog, alleged to be “deliberately” run over, has started the long road to recovery.

Witnesses reported seeing the elderly dog, who belongs to local charity, Friends of the Animals (FOTA), run over by a silver car in Victoria Recreation Ground in Newport on February 17. Daisy lives with a permanent foster ‘mum’, and was on her lead at the time she was struck by the car.

A witness to the incident said: “Poor Daisy was screaming as she rolled under the car which left a tyre impression on her body. There were witnesses who tried to stop the vehicle that sped off.”

This week a FOTA spokeswoman said that, although it was feared that she might not pull through after the accident, Daisy has taken a few tentative steps. She added: “She truly is a wonder dog. We are all in awe of this incredible girl with such a strong will to live and fight on.

“Pete from the People’s Vet did a home visit and was delighted by her progress. He has given her more pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication.

“We hope that Daisy makes the best recovery possible, but sadly there may be some permanent nerve damage.”

Her foster mother said: “It was a shock for Daisy and myself with the incident but I am overwhelmed by the generosity from people on the Island, and would like to thank the Isle of Wight Observer for sharing Daisy’s story.”

A police spokesman said the incident remains under investigation, but it is believed the driver of the car has been traced but denies seeing the dog while driving.
