Medina Community Choir has returned from a successful week-long tour of Paris, performing at iconic French landmarks and historic churches.
Fifty members of the Island-based choir visited the capital in early August, marking the group’s 20th anniversary. Performances included appearances at the Eiffel Tower, the steps of Sacré-Cœur at Montmartre, and three churches, including Saint Sulpice.
Choir director, Hannah Brear, said: “Our choir goes on tour every two years and this year, being our 20th year of singing together, it seemed only right to celebrate in style with a tour to Paris, accompanied by our Orchestra of the Gods, led by James Longford.
“There were too many highlights to mention them all here, but top of my list would be a five-minute standing ovation after singing to a packed church at our final concert, singing at the top of the Eiffel Tower, singing in Saint Sulpice, and swimming in the Seine.”
What began as a small school ensemble has grown into a large community choir, with members ranging from teens to those in their seventies. The group performs a repertoire spanning pop, classical, gospel, and musical theatre.
Hannah added: “Many of our members don’t sight-read, but that’s not a barrier to the high standards we reach. Aside from enjoying the music, singing regularly is a fantastic way to help your breathing and memory, and being part of a community choir is very sociable, too.”
The choir begins its Autumn/Winter season on September 3, with rehearsals held in Carisbrooke ahead of December concerts. You can find out more about joining by email to secretary@medinacommunitychoir.org.uk.
