Cowes software staff find fossil during beach clean

The Yokogawa Marex beach cleaning team

Colleagues from Cowes software company, Yokogawa Marex, took part in a recent beach clean, covering the coastline from Cowes Green to Gurnard.

Nineteen employees set out at low tide on a sunny spring day, each armed with a litter picker and bin bag, as part of the company’s commitment to supporting the local community and environment.

Items collected included clothing, an old metal tractor seat, several car parts and, fittingly for a technology firm, a circuit board and a computer hard drive. Discarded fishing nets and other plastics were also removed from the shoreline. The most unusual find was a fossil which experts have since identified as part of a 35‑million‑year‑old sea turtle shell.

“Although part of a Japanese‑owned global company, it’s always been important for us to work within and benefit our local area here on the Island,” said divisional director, Wayne Matthews. “We picked up plenty of waste that would otherwise have been washed out to sea, while spending a few working hours outside on a sunny day.”

The litter pickers were supplied by Ryde Library, which will lend them to anyone wishing to clean up their local area.
