Cowes Men’s Shed has celebrated its eighth birthday with members, visitors and the Island’s High Sheriff, Nigel Hartley.

The Storeroom2010 project welcomed guests for tours of its carpentry workshop, craft room, IT area and gardens, as members reflected on the role the Shed plays in tackling loneliness, bereavement, poor mental health and social isolation.

Mr Hartley described the visit as “an eye opener” and said: “They do sterling work. The stories were humbling and the commitment was overwhelming.”

Project leader Adam Martin said the anniversary was a chance to recognise the friendships and support networks built through the Shed.

He said: “Many of our members come here after difficult life experiences including bereavement, ill health or loneliness. We are helping people rebuild their confidence and self-worth.

“The Shed gives people a place where they feel valued, included and supported. Seeing everyone together celebrating eight years was incredibly special.”
