A charity football match to support a campaign inspired by three-year-old youngster Teddy Ward and his fight against a rare, life-limiting mitochondrial disease takes place on Saturday at Shanklin FC.

The game will be between a Team Teddy XI and the Isle of Wight Ladies Football Team, kicking off at 1pm and the afternoon will include stalls, a raffle, family entertainment and a ticket‑holder prize draw. Teddy’s parents, Jess and Dan, hope it will become an annual event.

Born in June 2022, Teddy was just 18 months old when he has diagnosed with an extremely rare, life‑limiting mitochondrial disease. He is believed to be the only child in the UK currently living with it and one of 55 in the world.

Doctors have warned that Teddy’s heart and energy levels will always need close monitoring, and there is currently no cure.
