The Hampshire and Isle of Wight fire service (HIWFS) is on the hunt for new firefighters and is inviting Islanders to find out more about this life-changing role at an open day on March 1 at Ryde Fire Station. The event is aimed at showcasing what it means to be a firefighter and encouraging people from all backgrounds to consider joining the service.
The fire service is keen to debunk the myth that firefighting is solely about battling blazes and cutting people free from cars. Area manager Ben Allen explained that communication and community engagement are now just as vital, with firefighters helping to spread lifesaving safety messages and build positive relationships in their local area.
Attendees at the open day can try out practical selection tests, chat with current firefighters, and learn about the diverse responsibilities of the job, which include fire prevention work in local communities. Full training is provided for new recruits, meaning no prior firefighting experience is necessary.
Mr Allen highlighted the opportunities available within the service. He said: “If you have never considered working for the fire service before but want to make a difference to the community, come along and find out more about becoming a firefighter.
“It really is a fantastic career for anyone, with personal development and training that is second to none and opportunities to specialise and progress.”
The three-hour sessions will run from 10am or 2pm giving a hands-on introduction to the selection process and insights into what it takes to serve and protect the public. Spaces are limited for the open day, and booking is essential. Reserve your space via iw.observer/fireservice-open-day.
