The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary in Sandown has announced the death of Casper, their much loved white lion, at the age of 18.
Following a recent decline in his health, Casper was peacefully put to sleep yesterday (Thursday), under the guidance of the veterinary team. He leaves behind his half- sister and lifelong companion, Frosty.
Animal manager, Marc, said: “Our welfare protocols are developed alongside vets and experts to ensure the highest standards of care.
Sadly, a recent health assessment confirmed Casper’s condition was not improving. We had to make the heart-breaking but humane decision to let him go.”
Born on August 24, 2006, at West Midlands Safari Park, to parents from Timbavati, South Africa, Casper joined Sandown Zoo on
January 8, 2010. His striking white coat and powerful roar made him a true icon on the Island, capturing the hearts of visitors and staff alike.
Big cat carer, Sandra, reflected: “Casper was more than majestic, he was gentle, patient, and deeply bonded with Frosty. Working with him was a profound and humbling experience.”
Casper was also one of the UK’s last remaining male white lions, making him an important ambassador for his species.
