CABINET CONNECTION: Cllr Julie Jones-Evans – cabinet member for economy, regeneration, culture and leisure

I’m very proud to bring forward our Island Cultural Strategy. It acknowledges culture’s deep role in our identity, covering not just arts and traditions but our environment and collective sense of self.

At the core of this strategy is the Island Collection, a dynamic assortment of cultural organisations encapsulating the Island’s spirit. With their diverse abilities, they’ve created this strategy, moulding our vision for the Island’s cultural future.

The Island boasts an influential cultural legacy, with figures like Tennyson, photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, Charles Darwin and the Isle of Wight Festival. Their impact continues to inspire our arts scene and attract both tourists and new residents.

Our High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) plays an important part in celebrating our built heritage and supporting the town centres of Ryde and Newport. Part of our vision in the Newport scheme aims to enhance pedestrian environments while maintaining vehicular access, featuring wider footpaths, seating areas, greenery, and displays of our rich architectural heritage.

Our initiatives are inclusive, as demonstrated by expanded disabled parking bays.

The ambitious Newport Harbour Cultural Centre project exemplifies our vision, with plans for a new records office, theatre, library, gallery, and more, poised to create a vibrant cultural nucleus. A proposed campus-style design would allow it to integrate with the surrounding urban landscape, creating a cultural quarter.

A sustainable financial strategy underpins our efforts, essential for the longevity of our cultural and creative sectors. Recent recognitions from the Arts Council England (ACE), including designation as an ACE Priority Place, and securing over £2 million investment, validate this approach and demonstrates that the Island can deliver significant projects.

In partnership with national funders like ACE and Historic England, we’re bringing our projects to life. Successful events like Ventnor Fringe Festival and the development of their new community events underscore our dynamic cultural spirit.

In sum, our mission is to nurture a vibrant and inclusive cultural environment on the Isle of Wight, building on our rich history to create an inspiring future in cultural evolution.
