The Brambles Bank was a hive of sporting activity as the Autumn low tide saw a tug-of-war and a cricket match on Friday. The annual tug-of-war, in the late afternoon, featured a group of Armed Forces veterans, The Edgar Evans Club, raising money for the Buckland Park adventure play park in Portsmouth.

Rob De Silva helped organised the event and said: “We had four teams, two from our club named Edgar Evans Port and Edgar Evans Starboard, Wilsonhalligan Yacht Recruitment and Ocean Sports Tuition.

“Andy Murray, who owns Ocean Sports Tuition, has been with us from the beginning, when we first set up the charity, and provided the boats and drivers to ensure our safety while on the bank as we only have an hour to arrive, compete and get off again.

“There are only a couple of times a year when we can attempt to do the tug-of-war during the Spring and Autumn low tides, so this was our only opportunity.”

Earlier in the day, it was the turn of the cricketers, with the annual fixture between Southampton’s Royal Southern Yacht Club and the Island Sailing Club, the 40th anniversary of the match.

The Southampton club came out on top, 100-99. The victorious team is always decided ahead of the game, with the two sides taking turns at winning.
