A “truly inspirational gentleman”

WW2 veteran Alec Penstone is a familiar face on the Island, and he will shortly celebrate his 101st birthday. A party had been planned earlier this month, but celebrations were put on hold after Alec was unexpectedly admitted to hospital.

Last week, members of the Vectis Services Lodge, the Island’s military and services Freemasons lodge, paid a special visit to Alec at St Mary’s Hospital.

Adam Abraham said it had been “both a privilege and an honour” to spend time with Alec. Over coffee, the group, all former servicemen, were captivated by his memories of

Alec’s wartime service in the Royal Navy.

Alec joined the Navy in 1943, completing his training that December. After time in submarines, he was drafted to HMS Campania, an escort aircraft carrier that took part in the Arctic Convoys to Russia. The ship also played a vital role during the D‑Day landings, sweeping for mines and searching for U‑boats before returning to Arctic duties.

Alec and HMS Campania completed ten convoy crossings in total.

The group described him as “a truly inspirational gentleman”, as they paid tribute to his remarkable service and spirit.
