On Mother’s Day morning, 22 Wight Tri members, including several valiant mums on a mission, traded lie-ins and breakfast in bed for running shoes and bike helmets at the Colwell Caulker Duathlon.
The course featured either a 2.6km (1.6 miles) or 4.1km (2.5 miles) run along Colwell to Totland and back, followed by a choice of two bike loops: the scenic long route (26km – 16 miles) via Military Road or the shorter loop (16km – 10 miles) linking up through Wilmingham Lane and across Yarmouth bridge.
Paul Martin completed the ‘long bike’ in a flying 46m 33s, however was pipped at the post by Craig Wilson for the long course only by 25 seconds in a finish time of 1h 25m 15s. The speediest over the short course was Patrick Condy with a finish of 1h 3m 47s but only 51 seconds behind was Jurgita Bates at 1h 4m 36s.
The real thrill came with the results over hot drinks and cake, where precision and timing ruled supreme. Six members finished within 30 seconds of their nominated times. Taking the “timing crown,” however, was newcomer Martin Richomme, who nailed his finish at 1h 9m 58s, just two seconds off his predicted time on the short course.
The next event is the Spring Triathlon on Sunday, April 13 at 8am held at the West Wight Sports Centre.
