The Special Olympics Isle of Wight team has returned home from a great day of competition in Waterlooville with an extraordinary haul of medals. Competing against athletes from South East Hampshire on March 22, the team proudly secured 11 gold, seven silver, and four bronze medals in what was their first event of the year.
Led by coach Gina Wyatt, the team included Sarah Beane, Summer Wyatt, Anna Rosa Crettella, Ella King-Smith, Thomas Pitt, William Bennett, Beki Juke, and Ffleur Foster. Each athlete delivered outstanding performances, with every competitor earning at least three medals – a reflection on their hard work and dedication.
Beyond the impressive medal tally, the team left their mark with resilience and determination. Several athletes exceeded their personal bests, pushing the limits of their abilities in events such as the standing long jump and foam javelin. Their efforts and commitment to improvement were inspiring not just to their team but also to spectators.
“It was more than just a competition,” said David Tolley, chairman and trustee of Special Olympics Isle of Wight. “It was a celebration of resilience, teamwork, and the power of sport to bring people together. Every single athlete should feel incredibly proud.”
The team thanked Ryde School with Upper Chine for the loan of their minibus, ensuring they could travel to the event and compete and Wightlink for their support.
Success in this competition marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting year for the Special Olympics Isle of Wight team.
