By Press Release May 19, 2023

The Isle of Wight Observer of 20th May 1922 carried the news of a tragic incident which took place in Rookley. It is clear there are a number of unanswered questions about Mr Shorthouse’s untimely demise, although it seems the writer may know more about the situation than he or she is able to report!

MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR NEAR ARRETON.

Mr William Hartshorne Shorthouse, of Stickworth Hall, Arreton, was found lying dead with terrible gunshot wounds in the head and a sporting gun by his side at Dolcroft Cottage, Rookley, a neighbouring village, the residence of a middle aged single woman named Coombes, who was ill in bed and was unaware of the tragedy.

Mr Shorthouse, who was about 60, was a private gentleman, who had resided in the Island for many years, and he and his family were well known in prominent local sporting circles. Miss Coombes was formerly a cook at Ryde and is about 40. Her family are farmers in the district. Mr Shorthouse it is stated was a frequent visitor to the Cottage. On Wednesday morning he visited Miss Coombes, who was in bed suffering from neuritis, and left as she thought about midday. Neighbours, however found his body in the passage about 4pm. Miss Coombes stated that she heard no report of a gun being fired. Mr Shorthouse had left in the lock of the door a note giving instructions to a tradesman as to the chicken meal he should leave and requesting him to leave the change. Two £1 Treasury notes were in the lock.

Mr Shorthouse had lived at Stickworth Hall for about 10 years and had a grown up family. He was formerly a prominent member of the Isle of Wight Hunt.
