Cyclists from across the country took to the Island’s roads on Sunday, taking part in the largest free cycling event in the UK, the Isle of Wight Randonnée.
Around 3,000 cyclists were involved in the day-long event which took place over two clockwise routes of 100km (62m) or 55km (34m).
Nine riders from the Breakaway Cycling Club, Swindon, took part and said of the experience: “It was perfect riding weather for most of the day, though the occasional north-westerly wind kept us on our toes. It was a challenging day with plenty of hills to keep the legs burning, but the stunning island views made it all worthwhile.
“A brilliantly organised event, joining 3,000 other riders with five well-placed checkpoints to refuel and regroup.”
The IW Randonnee was established by the Wayfarers in 1985 and uniquely follows a route around the whole of the Isle of Wight taking minor roads and lanes where possible enabling the rider to see and enjoy the best of the Island’s scenery.
Last year, through donations, and badge sales, organisers shared £8,000 between three Island charities with several local schools also benefitting through their refreshment sales at various checkpoints.
