Hundreds of people joined dignitaries to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Medina Marching Band, with a spectacular evening of music and precision marching, with a special Tattoo at Cowes Enterprise College on Saturday.
The audience were treated to five decades of music, marching, and community spirit, as current members, former players, families, supporters, and invited guests gathered for the golden anniversary event, including Lord-Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, High Sheriff, Nigel Hartley, and members of the IW Council.
The event welcomed a distinguished line-up of guest performers, including Wight Diamonds Marching Band, Burgess Hill Marching Youth Band, the Royal Marine Volunteer Cadet Corps Band, from Gosport, Surbiton Royal British Legion Youth Marching Band, and a precision drill display by 1024 Squadron Isle of Wight Air Cadets. The evening concluded with a stirring massed bands finale that brought the celebrations to a memorable close.
Founded in 1976, Medina Marching Band has spent five decades giving young people opportunities to develop musical talent, discipline, team-work, and confidence, while proudly representing the Isle of Wight at events both locally and nationally.
The anniversary event also served as a reunion for former members, many of whom returned to celebrate the band’s achievements, and reconnect with old friends.
Kevin Downer, chairman of Medina Marching Band, said: “This was more than just a performance – it was a celebration of everyone who has played a part in Medina’s journey over the past 50 years. From our current members to former players, volunteers, instructors, and supporters, this anniversary belongs to all of them.
“We are incredibly proud of our history, but equally excited about the future and continuing to provide opportunities for young people through music and marching.”
The band also announced, during the Tattoo, that it has been invited to take part in the prestigious Lord Mayor’s Show, in London, on November 14.
Further highlights in this milestone year include appearances at the London Band Week Tattoo at ExCeL London, followed by participation in National Marching Music Day, on June 27-28, where bands from across the country will gather on Horse Guards Parade, before marching up The Mall, past Buckingham Palace, and returning via Birdcage Walk.
