Island Roads has met with Wroxall community representatives ahead of a major carriageway reconstruction scheme due to begin in November.
The project will see large sections of St John’s Road, High Street and Clarence Road rebuilt, roads that have been the focus of calls for resurfacing from local councillors and campaigners.
Work is due to start on November 10 and could take up to 12 weeks to complete. To minimise disruption, the company plans to pause over the Christmas period to avoid affecting local trade, before resuming in the New Year.
During construction, the route will be subject to a 24-hour closure, except during the two-week festive break.
Preparation work will also be carried out ahead of future strengthening of the embankment affected by a major landslip in 2022.
Island Roads recently met with Cllr Steve Hastings, ward member for Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch, alongside Wroxall Parish Council and bus operator Southern Vectis, to discuss the resurfacing programme.
An Island Roads spokesperson said the scheme would deliver long-term benefits: “The work will not only improve ride quality now, but address the underlying causes of deterioration, reducing future maintenance. To achieve this, we will dig to greater depths to rebuild the road foundations.”
They added that the company would continue to liaise with residents and phase the project to lessen the impact on the community, with detailed timings to be announced shortly.
