The iconic Red Arrows could be set to soar over Ryde again this June, as part of the Isle of Wight’s Armed Forces Day celebration, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Last year marked their stunning debut over Ryde Sands, leaving thousands of spectators in awe. Organisers are now working to secure their return for Sunday, June 29.
Ian Dore, event organiser, shared his optimism, saying, “We have a slot reserved in the Red Arrows’ display season, but final confirmation relies on securing MOD support to ensure safety standards can be met. The groundwork is done, but public and corporate funding will also play a vital role in making this happen.”
The Island’s Armed Forces Day is one of only three such events being considered for a Red Arrows display. Although the final details have yet to be announced, Ian added: “Ultimately, it will be down to public generosity to get it fully airborne. If every attendee from last year’s event contributed just £2, the display would be fully funded”. The community is also being encouraged to rally together, with two major Island businesses already contributing to the cause.
“The Red Arrows are more than a display team; they embody national pride,” added Ian. “Bringing them back would be a fitting tribute to those who serve and have served, while offering a thrilling experience for families who might not otherwise have access to such displays.
“Times are tough, but given the significance of this year, it’s appropriate to rally together, helping to fund a spectacular display that honours the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of our Armed Forces community.”
Details on fund-raising initiatives will be released on the Isle of Wight Armed Forces Day website on Wednesday, go to iw.observer/armed-forces-day for details.
