Last weekend, more than 1,600 participants took part in the IW Ultra Challenge, a tough 106km (65.8 mile) coastal trek around the Island. Among them was a dedicated team from the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, raising funds to support the rescue of Benji and Balu, two European brown bears previously found living next to a restaurant in Azerbaijan.
The Wildheart team included CEO Lawrence, big cat carers Mary and Sandra, and supporter Graeme, also a photographer for local estate agent Pittis. The group began the trek from Chale base camp just after 7am on Saturday. After walking for 34 hours and 15 minutes, the remaining team members crossed the finish line on Sunday evening. Graeme had to withdraw after completing 70km.
Throughout the event, the Sanctuary posted updates on social media, encouraging donations to their Project Bear fundraiser. By the end of the weekend, they had raised more than £3,000 to support the bears’ rescue and care.
Reflecting on the challenge, Sandra said: “We pushed ourselves to the limit. The emotional highs and lows were intense, but the generosity and encouragement we received helped carry us through. Thank you to everyone who supported us on this journey.”
