A new radio station, with no adverts, has been launched on the Island. Wight Pirate Radio (WPR) is the idea of presenter, Phil Norris, of Cowes.
He explained: “WPR is a new exciting non-profit voluntary radio station and is fully licensed.
“I’m bringing some great Country Music, Blues, Jazz, Rock ‘n’ Roll, 70’s Disco, Classic Rock and a very unique show, called the ‘Sounds of the Shoals’, five evenings a week.
“The Shoals Show showcases 65 years of Muscle Shoals – Alabama music – famous for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, the Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and many more.”
Phil is enthusiastic about music, especially Blues and Country, and has previously received a National Bronze award, beating 400 radio stations, when he was volunteering for another radio station.
As far as adverts are concerned, he added: “I’m sure people get fed up with ads; I do – especially a group of them together, so I’m all about the music.
“My show is set on an old pirate ship so you will hear the ocean and crew pop in from time to time. I’ve been very creative with the station; my crew have names, voices, pictures, personalities and their own story lines.
“This is a multi-faceted radio station which brings fun back to the airwaves. If you’ve had a rough day or even a good day, tune into Wight Pirate Radio, and do what one of his crew suggests: pull up a hammock, sit back and enjoy.”
