VECTIS VIEW: Jon Carter – Managing director of Education Destination

In the UK school trips have been an invaluable educational tool for years, providing a unique way to enrich students’ learning experiences. Among many destinations, the Isle of Wight has emerged as a captivating and cost-effective location that perfectly complements school curriculums. My company, Education Destination, is at the forefront of arranging many of these educational adventures.

A big part of the draw for school groups is that our Island classroom is unique, with its history, scenery, attractions, and outdoor spaces, making the whole Island a very attractive destination. The appeal of the Island as an educational haven is underlined by its ability to seamlessly merge education and recreation.

Education Destination curates a range of tailor-made trips for primary, secondary, and higher education schools and colleges.

These excursions provide students of all ages with a chance to combine fun and learning while exploring the Island’s rich heritage, open spaces, and captivating attractions.

The company is proud of collaborating closely with our accommodation provider and attraction partners to craft unforgettable school trips that set the Island apart from other UK destinations. We handle all the intricate trip management details, and we are currently actively seeking more accommodation providers and attractions to join us due to the growing demand from schools eager to explore the Island in 2024 and beyond.

We meticulously design our trips to cater to Key Stages 1-4, fostering critical thinking, team building, and creating indelible memories. These memories encourage students to revisit the Island with their families and friends. Our collection of more than 750 curriculum-relevant teaching and learning resources, all developed by experienced educators, means that Island has a peerless repository of quality materials for school trips in the UK.

While we already enjoy collaborative partnerships with more than 50 accommodation providers and attractions, the surge in demand means we need even more partners to meet the needs of eager schools. Failure to accommodate the demand means schools would be likely to shift their trips to other UK destinations, resulting in lost revenue for the Island’s economy and all its stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

We have a unique approach in our support for the partners we work with. With Education Destination, deposits are paid on booking, and all accommodation is paid in full prior to any group’s arrival, often as far as 12 weeks in advance. Unlike other intermediaries, we do not levy any commission on bookings, ensuring that our partners receive the full cost of their accommodations or attraction visits. In addition to financial considerations, Education Destination handles all the planning and itineraries for the groups, including risk assessments and all transportation needs. Accommodation providers of all sizes, including smaller B&Bs and guest houses, can benefit from this mutually rewarding partnership all year round.

We would like to extend an invitation to the Island’s accommodation providers and attractions to contact us to explore the potential of school trips as a lucrative source of business for the forthcoming season and beyond.

In an era where experiential learning is highly prized, the Isle of Wight beckons as an ideal setting for students to embark on a fun journey of discovery and enlightenment, supported by dedicated partners committed to nurturing the minds of future generations.
