A sleepout by members of the Vectis Services Lodge has raised nearly £2,500 for the Veterans Hub, Ryde.
It was the third fundraising camp by the Ryde Lodge, which is made up of members who are, or have served, in either the Military, Emergency or Civil Services. Their efforts will raise funds for homeless veterans.
Despite their military training, things did not start well for the veterans when their supply truck, nicknamed ‘The Beast’, got stuck in the mud. A Discovery came to the rescue and promptly got stuck as well. Thankfully, both trucks were recovered thanks to the assistance of a local farmer and his tractor. They suffered no damage but both vehicles needed a good clean.
There was a mixture of sleeping arrangements ranging from a tent to an army style basha and even a sleeping bag designed to be used outside. During a cold evening, and with the participants gathered around a fire, a toast was made to all the homeless vets sleeping rough, a reminder as to why everyone was there.
Sleep didn’t come easily thanks to the noise of the wildlife, such as a persistent screech from a barn owl and foxes calling. Around 5.30am, there was the loud rumbling sound of US B52’s flying overhead.
The £2,464.09 raised, brings the total over the last three years to around £12,000.
Hub founder, Dale Hillier, said: “They guys have done us proud again this year, they’re great supporters and they have our sincere thanks.”
