Tribute to Armed Forces at Ryde Esplanade event

Ryde Esplanade will host Armed Forces Day on Sunday, with a full programme of flypasts, marching bands and parachute displays — but organisers say the event is about much more than spectacle.

At its heart, the day is a public thank you to the Armed Forces community, from serving personnel and veterans to cadets, reservists and the families who support them.

Ian Dore, one of the organisers and a veteran himself, said: “We put this day on to say one of the best things you can say to someone — thank you. It’s about recognising the service and support that often goes unseen.”

Backed by the IW Council, the event is also supported by local organisations and volunteers, many of whom have a personal connection to the Forces.

Highlights include appearances by the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, but organisers say it is the sense of community and shared respect that gives the day meaning.

Ian added: “This isn’t just a show — it’s a statement that we appreciate and value everyone who serves, or has served.”

Veterans from all eras are recognised, while cadet forces and reservists are praised for the unique roles they play.

The event begins at 10am with a parachute display and marching parade. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and use public transport. See the advertisement on page 19 for full details.
