By Isle of Wight ObserverAn incident at Totland Pier was resolved peacefully just after dawn this morning (Saturday) when Hampshire Police scrambled the National Police Air Service helicopter and Coastguard rescue teams rushed to Totland Pier.
A search located a man at the pier and – after police on the ground spoke to him – he was taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, by an IW Ambulance crew.
As previously reported by the IW Observer, the NPAS helicopter woke Totland residents at around 6am as it hovered in the skies above homes in The Avenue area of the village, just a few hundred yards from the shoreline.
The police helicopter was first spotted in Ryde some time earlier before flying to Totland.
This followed reports of a man on the derelict Totland Pier with apparent concerns about his behaviour and welfare.
Police spoke to the man with Coastguard officers from The Needles and Ventnor standing by. With police on the ground dealing with the incident successfully, the helicopter finally departed at approximately 6.35am. Freshwater Independent Lifeboat – based at nearby Freshwater Bay – was also involved having been alerted at 6.06am and it was launched and made for Totland before it was stood down.
