Six days of elite chess on the Island

Some of the world’s finest players will take part in the Isle of Wight Chess Masters tournament, which starts at Ryde School at 11am next Tuesday.

More than 130 top-level players will compete in the tournament, with about 300 taking part throughout the week.

Among the elite competitors are Australia’s No1 grandmaster, Bobby Cheng, and England’s newest grandmaster, Ahmeet Ghasi, who will battle it out over the six days in the Ryde School theatre.

The tournament will showcase elite-level competition, alongside a programme of community activities.

Organisers have planned a range of free activities, supported by Visit Isle of Wight, from expert-led lessons and Q&A sessions, to casual games and live match screenings.

The tournament will also feature live commentary, daily updates, and big-screen match broadcasts. Entry is free but spaces for many events are limited.
