Brighstone CE Aided Primary School has been praised in a glowing inspection report highlighting its strong Christian vision, nurturing ethos, and commitment to pupils’ spiritual and personal development.

The Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS), carried out in April, concluded that the school is ‘living up to its foundation as a Church school and is enabling pupils and adults to flourish’.

The report commended the school’s core values of love, courage and respect, saying they unite the school community and are lived out daily by both pupils and staff. Inspectors found that children ‘receive a warm welcome’, with new starters describing being greeted with ‘open arms and big hugs’.

Pupils were praised for their responsibility towards others, respectful attitudes, and care for the world around them. The inspector highlighted how the school meets individual needs effectively and supports wellbeing through a range of initiatives, including a Christian youth group helping older pupils develop confidence ahead of secondary school.

The school’s daily worship was described as ‘inspiring’, with spiritual development supported through the concept of ‘windows, mirrors, doors and candles’. Long-standing links with local churches and clergy were also highlighted, including opportunities for pupils to ring the bells at St Mary’s and other Island churches.

The report recognised the school’s efforts to offer a broad and inclusive curriculum, referencing its approach to cultural diversity through inter-faith learning, and praised the quality and structure of Religious Education.

Headteacher, Rebecca Lennon, said: “This result is a testament to the dedication of our staff, governors, families and church community. Most of all, we’re proud of our pupils, who live out our values every day.”

The report also encouraged the school to further develop its Christian vision and Religious Education curriculum to reflect Christianity’s global context.
