The IW Observer team was at the Wildheart Sanctuary in Sandown this morning to witness a very special moment – the arrival of European brown bears Benji and Balu to their new forever home.
We’ve captured plenty of footage of their delivery, but one of the most touching moments came just afterwards, when we popped into the office and found the team watching the very first pictures of Benji in his new bear bedroom. Balu was still being unloaded.
Despite having spent his whole life on concrete floors, Benji’s natural instincts kicked in immediately. He began trying to dig his way out of the bedroom – part of a specially adapted set of four rooms inside two shipping containers welded together – trying to get to the outside world.
Benji can see it, hear it, smell it… and he clearly can’t wait to begin his new life here on the Island.
